Baby Registry Must Haves

And it's not a bunch of onesies and bouncers

When it comes to new babies, family members and friends are eager to contribute to whatever gifts the mama puts on her registry. Whether it’s a fancy car seat setup or a personalized crib sheet set, if it’s on the registry someone’s bound to buy it. Knowing that items on the registry usually get bought, we’re shaking up the way mamas make their registries. We want mamas to put things on their registry that will make their lives better-- and therefore their baby’s life better. Onesies are great, but how about childbirth education and a doula to help make labor and delivery feel more supported and empowered? Wipe warmers are a nice idea, but a more thoughtful gift would be a prenatal massages to make mama’s body feel great during this time of transition What good is a breast pump and fancy bottles if you haven’t had help from a Lactation Consultant to know how to use any of it?

We know that babies do need some stuff, but not the amount that the big box stores would have you believe. And often, there’s an older sister, cousin, friend, or Facebook mom’s group with baby gear they’re hoping to send to a good home. Strollers, clothes, baby gates, changing tables, etc. are all just as good when they’ve been pre-loved.

When you and your family aren’t spending tons of money on baby gear, you can get the things that will make your life as a new mama and family feel more smooth, comfortable, and empowered.

Here are a few of my favorite registry items found on BeHerVillage.com:

Lactation Consultant: For me, breastfeeding was the most unnatural-natural thing I’d experienced. I had no idea what I was doing and I really didn’t know that my baby wouldn’t know what she was doing either. My Lactation Consultant saved the day, my nipples, and my milk supply when my daughter was 6 days old.

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy: I saw a pelvic floor PT at around 12 weeks postpartum because I couldn’t walk up the stairs without peeing a little bit. I would have paid double for her services, because she helped me so much, but I also would have loved it if this was a service that I could have put on my registry and just have it paid for by a family member.

Doula: I loved my doula. I hired her when I was about 5 months pregnant and we were able to develop a good relationship, so that when it came time to give birth, I was super comfortable with her and very trusting. She was such a support person during the birth and in the early postpartum days. If I had to choose between free diapers for life or a doula, I will choose doula every single time.

Prenatal Yoga: I loved doing yoga when I was pregnant. There was this slow reconnection to my body and to my baby that grew each time I took a class.

Mom Groups: I had no family near where I lived at the time I gave birth to my daughter, so I was desperate for mom friends. Just someone to text during a 2am feeding, or to Facetime and say: “Is this normal?!” Putting prenatal and postpartum group classes on a gift registry ensures that you’ll have a crew of people to walk with you through pregnancy and beyond.

These are just a few of the things I personally used and loved when I was pregnant and after I gave birth. There were tons of gifts that I ended up returning or only using once, and Be Her Village is something I wish existed two years ago.
