About Meema Spadola: Postpartum Doula & Certified Lactation Counselor, Supporting Growing Families Since 2006
Bio
I'm a certified postpartum doula & lactation counselor, providing non-judgmental & evidence-based support since 2006. I was honored that The NY Times described me as “a modern Mary Poppins: a combination friend, teacher and spirit guide…” I have a particular interest in lactation support, infant massage, “baby wearing,” and supporting parents who struggle with postpartum mood disorders. I'm the proud mother of a son born in July 2007 & live with my family in Bklyn. Read more at meemadoula.com
Q&A
Q: What drew you into working with parents-to-be?
A: I am a former documentary filmmaker whose films about body image and family issues have been broadcast on PBS, HBO and beyond. I switched careers after witnessing a dear friend navigate postpartum depression and anxiety, and experience that convinced me of the crucial need for increased support for all parents, whether it's their first baby or not.
Q: What are your certifications and trainings?
A: I was trained and certified with DONA (Doulas of North America) in 2006 and became a Certified Lactation Counselor (Healthy Children) in 2010. I pursue regular continuing education opportunities to increase my knowledge about newborns, lactation, pumping, bottle feeding, postpartum recovery, and postpartum mood disorders.
Q: What locations or areas do you serve?
A: I work in large parts of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. When you contact me, please let me know your neighborhood and cross streets so that I can confirm that you're in my service area.
Q: How much experience do you have?
A: I've been working with growing families since 2006 and have supported over 300 families during that time. Additionally, as a teacher of prenatal lactation and newborn care classes, I have taught hundreds more parents-to-be. Even with this level of experience, I approach each family with an open mind and respect and support their growing expertise.
Q: What's your top piece of advice for an expectant mom?
A: My top piece of advice for an expectant parent is to spend some time doing postpartum planning. There are many templates out there that you can use, you can also read my essay https://tinyurl.com/ppplanning -- the time you spend thinking ahead, beyond planning for labor, is priceless!
