We Are All Alanis Morissette

There’s a recent clip of Alanis Morissette debuting a new song on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, from her own home, with her daughter on her hip. It was so perfect. Throughout the four minute song her daughter watches lovingly, asks questions about the words her mama sings, covers her mama’s mouth, sings into the microphone, and Alanis just goes with it, mothering in the moment. Laughing and singing, doing her job anyway, with love and grace. Like the rest of the parents of the world right now-- the ones on conference calls while pouring glasses of orange juice, the ones doing virtual yoga classes while their babies crawl all over them, and the ones trying to write cohesive business emails while pretending to be a dinosaur. 
 

There is perfection in how we are showing up imperfectly.

The song Alanis sings, through the giggles and interruptions, is about remembering our oneness, remembering that we are all part of this world, and a special promise to her children that all of us can relate to: “My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze”. So here’s to all the parents, in the moment, balancing life while simultaneously holding space for their little ones. You are incredible.
