How a Pediatric Physical Therapist Can Help Your Baby

You may be wondering why a baby might need to see a physical therapist. It’s a common question — and an important one!

If you’ve noticed your baby tends to turn their head to one side, dislikes certain positions, or seems uncomfortable during play or tummy time, you’re not alone. Sometimes these concerns are brushed off or met with a “wait and see” approach. However, early evaluation by a pediatric physical therapist can make a significant difference.

Why Early Intervention Matters

During your baby’s first year, their brain is developing rapidly — especially in the areas that control movement and coordination. This period is a window of incredible growth, and addressing small concerns early on can prevent bigger challenges later.
As a pediatric physical therapist with over 20 years of experience, most of it working with children under age three, I’ve never met a family who regretted starting therapy early. On the contrary, families often tell me how grateful they are for the guidance, reassurance, and progress they’ve seen in their baby’s development.

What a Pediatric Physical Therapist Looks At

When evaluating your baby, a skilled therapist looks at the whole body, not just one area. We’re trained to understand how every part works together to support movement and development.
We assess:
  • Primitive reflexes
  • Range of motion
  • Movement patterns
  • Tolerance to different positions
  • Progress toward age-appropriate motor milestones

For example, if your baby only rolls to one side or uses one leg differently when crawling, we don’t just correct the movement — we look for the reason behind it.

Common Concerns We Can Help With

A few examples of situations where therapy can be beneficial:
  • Your 2-month-old only turns their head to one side and a flat spot has developed — more tummy time alone won’t fix that. A therapist can evaluate the entire body and provide targeted exercises to help correct the asymmetry.
  • Your baby is spitting up frequently or struggling during feeds. A physical therapist trained in infant feeding can observe how the whole body moves and supports feeding to identify what’s contributing to the difficulty.
  • Your baby will only roll one way. A physical therapist will assess if there are any restrictions in the body limiting the baby from being able to roll in the other direction.

Early treatment for conditions like torticollis, plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome), oral motor dysfunction, and motor delays leads to better outcomes and less frustration for both parents and babies.

Accessing Pediatric Physical Therapy

There are many states that allow for direct access to a physical therapist. If you live in Massachusetts, where my clinic is located, you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a physical therapist — it’s a direct access state.
This means if you notice your baby has difficulty turning their head, tolerating tummy time, or meeting motor milestones, you can contact a therapist directly for an evaluation. You don’t have to wait and see — and you don’t have to go through it alone.
