At MSK Wellcare, women's health is a topic that is near and dear to our heart. From preparation for conception, to pregnancy support through the trimesters, and post-natal care, acupuncture and Chinese medicine have something to offer at every step of the process of a woman's journey to motherhood.

Pre-conception can be an exciting but also anxiety-producing time, depending on our temperament and the challenges we face along the way. For a woman who has trouble conceiving, or who has repeated miscarriages, the loss can be heartbreaking. We have personally seen acupuncture's power in overcoming these obstacles and promoting healing on all levels, both with achieving pregnancy and also healing the inevitable emotional wounds. Even for those women who have no trouble conceiving, acupuncture can be a wonderful way to prepare the body for the healthiest pregnancy possible. This is achieved by fine tuning the body's energetic, physical, and hormonal balance so that she enters the pregnancy with radiant health on her side.

During pregnancy, acupuncture can be helpful for women in taking care of a number of symptoms that commonly come up over the course of pregnancy.

From morning sickness in early pregnancy to sciatica in late pregnancy, and headaches, sinus congestion, allergies, immune boosting, and a plethora of other benefits to be used all the way through; acupuncture is a veritable treasure chest for the pregnant woman.

At the very end of the pregnancy, acupuncture can also help with turning a breech baby, or even encouraging labor if your doctor decides you must be scheduled for an induction.

Finally, the baby is born. In the postpartum period, acupuncture can help the new mother regain her strength after the draining experience of labor. During labor a lot of blood, yin, and Qi, or energy, is lost and must be replenished in the weeks after birth. Acupuncture as well as Chinese diet therapy can be a wonderful way to do this. Think whole cooked grains and nourishing bone broths. If the new mother is breastfeeding, she may want to avoid over the counter drugs, which acupuncture can help to replace. Acupuncture can also be an aid in the case of problems with lactation.

We hope this short article has given you a bit more knowledge and inspired you with the possibilities of what acupuncture can do for your health around conception, pre-, and post-partum. It is truly a magical time, and one of our favorite things to walk through with our clients. It is truly an honor and a joy. If you have any questions about your individual situation, do not hesitate to shoot us a message or give us a call.
