How to Prepare for Breastfeeding: Insights from Francie Webb on The BeHerVillage Podcast

Breastfeeding is often called a natural process, but that doesn’t mean it always comes naturally. Like any big milestone in life, preparation can make all the difference. On the latest episode of The BeHerVillage Podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Francie Webb, a doula, IBCLC, and owner of Go Milk Yourself. Francie shared her invaluable tips for setting yourself up for breastfeeding success, from taking classes to building a supportive environment at home.

Take a Breastfeeding Class

Francie’s first piece of advice? Take a breastfeeding class before your baby arrives. Breastfeeding is a skill, and like any skill, learning the basics ahead of time can make things much easier when you’re sleep-deprived and adjusting to life with a newborn. A good class can teach you about latching, feeding cues, and what’s normal during those early weeks. It can also help you feel more confident and prepared, which is half the battle.

Connect with a Trusted Lactation Professional

One of the best ways to prepare for breastfeeding is to build a relationship with a lactation professional you trust. Francie emphasizes that having someone you can call or text when questions arise can be a game-changer. Whether you’re navigating latching issues, milk supply concerns, or general questions, knowing you have a supportive IBCLC or lactation counselor in your corner can help ease any anxieties.

Set Yourself Up for a Positive Birth Experience

While breastfeeding doesn’t depend on having a “perfect” birth, Francie points out that setting yourself up for the best birth experience possible can help. A calm, supported birthing environment can set the tone for those early breastfeeding moments. Choosing a provider and birth setting that aligns with your preferences and values can be the foundation for feeling empowered and ready to meet your baby’s needs.

Set Boundaries and Expectations with Family

Breastfeeding is a deeply personal journey, and sometimes family or friends can unintentionally add stress with unsolicited advice or opinions. Francie suggests having open conversations with loved ones about your goals and boundaries. Whether it’s asking for privacy during feedings or explaining that you’re prioritizing your baby’s cues over a strict feeding schedule, setting expectations early can create a more peaceful postpartum environment.
